The Mini Convertible isn’t as rewarding to drive as its hatchback sibling, but its open-air exuberance makes up for that. You also get a terrific interior and sensible running costs, while strong residuals mean you can buy with your head as well as your heart.

Costing the same as Sport trim, Exclusive gives you the same equipment but focuses more on luxury than sportiness. To that end, it gives you 17 or 18in alloy wheels, leather seats and chrome and aluminium detailing.

If you want more oomph, the 176bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder Cooper S is a good place to start. It maintains the smooth delivery that you get with the Cooper, but cuts the 0-62mph time to a fraction under seven seconds.
