We’d recommend a peppy yet frugal Cooper in Exclusive trim to make the most of the Mini’s biggest strength, its well-appointed interior. It's disappointing that automatic emergency braking is optional, and it's worth pointing out that there are plenty of safer small cars. If practicality is high on your list of must-haves, though, we’d point you in the direction of the even more impressive Audi A1.

See full equipmentAvailable exclusively with the punchiest 2.0-litre engine, this sportiest Mini builds on Classic trim with 17in alloy wheels, a John Cooper Works bodykit, sports suspension, a sports exhaust, red brake callipers, part leather John Cooper Works sports seats, piano-black interior trim, cruise control, driving mode selection and stainless steel pedals. Too pricey to recommend, especially as rival hot hatches are more fun.
The engine
See full engine specsLike the Cooper S, this is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with a turbo. It delivers 228bhp to give a 0-62mph in as little as 6.1sec and is available with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox. It isn’t as efficient as the Cooper S and is too pricey to recommend, though.
