The W12 engine first fitted to the Bentley Bentayga is a mighty device – naturally smooth and potent, to a degree that’s not merely unnecessary but entirely gratuitous.
However, even if money were no object, it might not be your engine of choice. That’s because out in the real world, the performance advantage the W12 holds over this twin-turbo V8 is so small as to be negligible, and what you get in return is a more easily likeable charm with improved fuel economy. And, because cost is of importance even to prospective Bentley owners, there’s also the small matter of the £30,000 lower list price than the range-topping W12 model.
Then again, you can champion the V8 diesel over this V8 petrol for exactly the same reasons: it’s cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, and still awesomely quick by any reasonable barometer. That’s why it’s the diesel, not this highly commendable V8 petrol, which remains our pick of the range.
