Alfa Romeo firms up plans for next-generation models
* Alfa Romeo plans new line-up by 2018 * New range of petrol and diesel engines * New rear- and four-wheel-drive platforms planned...
Alfa Romeo's product range is set for major overhaul by 2018, according to senior sources.
What Car? sister publication Autocar reports that during the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles investor relations event in the US, Alfa chief executive Harald J Wester confirmed a range of new models arriving between 2015 and 2018.
Wester confirmed plans are afoot for eight new or heavily revised models, with a focus on rear- and four-wheel-drive powertrains. This confirms reports from the 2014 Geneva show in March that Alfa was making plans for rear-wheel drive.
Alfa’s UK range consists of the Mito supermini, Giulietta small family hatch and 4C sports car and convertible. The first new model is the Giulia, which will take on the BMW 3 Series from late 2015. Further plans include an executive-level saloon, a pair of SUVs and a further speciality sports car.
Three new petrol and two diesel engines, with four and six cylinders, are set to power the new range, although details on these are scarce.
Alfa hopes to increase its annual sales from the current level of 74,000 to nearer 400,000 by 2018.
