4. Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet

The Mercedes S-Class is well associated with luxury motoring and this open-top version only broadens its appeal. For a car of this size, it handles sharply with accurate steering, while the interior is as well appointed and luxurious as you'd expect. Whether you're driving it or being driven in it, the S-Class Cabriolet is excellent.

Our pick: S500 AMG Line

3. Audi TT Roadster

We named the coupΓ© version of the Audi TT a winner at the most recent What Car? Awards, so we'd expect this convertible version to perform strongly, too. It really impresses with an exciting driving style and the same high-tech interior that made the coupΓ© a winner, even if it remains a strict two-seater with very little storage space inside. Our favourite Sport trim gets you 18in alloy wheels and Bluetooth connectivity, although you'll want to specify rear parking sensors and the optional wind deflector as well.

Our pick: 1.8 TFSI 180 Sport

2. Audi A3 Cabriolet

The A3 Cabriolet is the smallest convertible model Audi offers, but it's also one of the best around. The electronic roof can be folded away at speeds of up to 31mph and the whole operation takes just 18sec. The 1.4-litre petrol engine we recommend is economical but sporty and the mid-range Sport trim offers all the goodies you'll want, including dual-zone climate control, sports seats, sat-nav and 17in alloy wheels.
