Best pick-ups 2020
Pick-up trucks were once only prized by farmers, but they're now popular with all sorts of drivers. To help you choose the best, we've tested eight of the main contenders available in the UK...
2. Ford Ranger
One of the biggest names in pick-ups, the Ranger has a duty to impress. There are four engines to choose from: three 2.0-litre units and a 3.2. Although the least powerful 2.0-litre feels a bit asthmatic, the 168bhp version provides enough power. Although the engine sounds a bit clattery, wind noise is well suppressed and the Ranger manages to absorb bumps better than firmer rivals such as the Navara. It’s also one of the most nimble pick-ups you can buy, with resistance to body lean and steering accuracy you can appreciate.
Inside, the entry-level trim comes with a six-way manually adjustable driver's seat. Although pricier models get leather seats, there’s still some cheap-feeling plastic on the dash. Higher-spec models come with Ford's highly regarded Sync 3 infotainment system.
The Amarok arrived at the pick-up party relatively late, in 2010, but it is one of the most well-rounded models you can buy. It is only available as a four-door with five seats and you’re restricted to a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, albeit with three different power outputs. All the engines are punchy and smooth, though, and they don't have the agricultural clatter of some rivals. The Ranger is great to drive by pick-up standards, too, with light, accurate steering and by far the best ride.
Inside, the infotainment system is the best of the bunch, with an easy layout. It has the widest interior, so there's plenty of head room front and back, although rear leg room isn't the best. In practical terms, the Amarok stands out, too, with the widest load bed and one of the highest payloads.
