4. Kia Sorento

New Kia Sorento & Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace vs Peugeot 5008

Just like the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Kia Sorento is a vast SUV. It just edges ahead of the Santa Fe because it has the longer of the two warranties, therefore offering added peace of mind against potentially expensive future bills.

There’s already a lot of standard equipment on the cheapest Sorento, but the mid-range KX-2 has a rear-view camera, sat-nav, leather trim and heated front seats. Again, it’s nothing special to drive, but that’s not what large SUVs are about.

3. BMW X3

BMW X3 4x4 (11 - 17)

The BMW X3 proves that you can find some truly prestigious SUVs for less than £20,000 that aren’t ten years old. This generation of X3 was a vast improvement on the original. For starters, it had a much nicer interior that befits a luxury vehicle, the mid-range SE model got a better level of standard equipment and the revised diesel engine that was introduced in the 20d in 2014 was rather refined and exceptionally economical.

It’s not quite as good value as the next two cars on this list, but if you can’t live without a premium badge on your large SUV, there’s still a lot to like about the X3.

We found: 2016 BMW X3 20d xDrive SE, 30,105 miles, £18,802

2. Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen Tiguan

Even though it hasn't topped this top 10, the Volkswagen Tiguan certainly doesn’t feel like a second-rate large SUV. In fact, it makes a great used buy, because while it was an expensive vehicle when new, you can find well-specified SE Nav models with our preferred 2.0-litre diesel engine for less than £20,000.

And if you do test drive a Tiguan, you’ll find it to be a very comfortable, hugely spacious and ultra-refined SUV. SE Nav examples have all the equipment you’ll need, with front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, tri-zone climate control and sat-nav.

If it weren’t for the fact that our winner is more fun to drive, the Tiguan could have won this.

We found: 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI SE Nav, 12,000 miles, £18,999
