Car of the Year Awards 2021: Estate Car of the Year
While estates lack the fashionable status of SUVs, they’re more practical. But an estate also needs to be a pleasure to spend time in, and easy to live with beyond the simple virtue of space...
Skoda Superb Estate 2.0 TDI 150 SE L
The Skoda Superb does everything you’d expect of an estate car, and then a bit extra. The 660-litre boot is enormous but, more than that, useful touches such as bag hooks, a 12V charging port and even a rechargeable torch make all the difference in everyday use.
The ‘useful and roomy’ theme continues through the rest of the Superb. Rear passengers get the sort of leg room you expect in something chauffeur-driven, and even the tallest of drivers will be comfortable, thanks to the heated, electrically adjustable driver’s seat. On top of that, there’s an easy-to-use touchscreen (with sat-nav, Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay) which finishes off an interior that looks and feels smart and solid.
As you’d expect, the Superb is smooth and reassuring to drive, whichever of the many engines you choose. There’s a version for everyone, from plug-in hybrid to high-powered four-wheel drive, but the happiest medium is this punchy yet refined and economical 2.0-litre diesel.
Essentially, the Superb Estate is the most complete wagon you’ll find, even before you consider how much it costs. But for this price? There’s absolutely no better choice.
> Comfortable ride
> Limo-like passenger space
> Huge boot and practical touches
