Alfa Romeo Tonale

On sale 2021

The Tonale will be only the second SUV in Alfa Romeo's history, fitting into the range below its first, the Stelvio. But more importantly, the Tonale will be Alfa Romeo’s first electrified car, with a plug-in hybrid system comprising a petrol engine at the front and an electric motor at the rear. A similar set-up was recently revealed in the Jeep Renegade, producing 236bhp, and the two cars are closely related under the skin.

Ford Puma

2019 Ford Puma front three quarter

On sale Late 2019

While the original Puma, launched in 1997, was a coupé based on the best-selling Fiesta hatchback, its successor is a SUV, albeit one still related to the Fiesta. In many ways this is encouraging, because few small cars are as good to drive. But the Puma is also surprisingly spacious and will be available with hybrid power. Expect prices to start at around £20,000.

Mercedes GLA

2020 Mercedes GLA prototype

On sale Early 2020

Mercedes' latest A-Class hatchback has proved a huge success, and now an SUV version, the GLA, is coming. It sits lower and has a more individual exterior look than its predecessor, while its interior mirrors the A-Class's.

Mazda CX30

Mazda CX-30

On sale Late 2019

Due to slot between the CX-3 and CX-5 in Mazda's range (no, we're not sure why they didn't call it the CX-4, either), the CX-30 is a Volvo XC40 rival based on the same underpinnings as the new Mazda 3, and with similar styling. It will be offered with mild hybrid petrol engines and a diesel, along with front or four-wheel drive. Inside, it has a 430-litre boot and a dial-controlled 8.8in infotainment screen.

Nissan Qashqai

Nissan IMq concept front

On sale Late 2020

It might look radical, but the IMq concept which Nissan showed at the 2019 Geneva motor show previews the next Qashqai family SUV. And it's not just the looks that are worth paying attention to; the concept mixes an electric motor with a 1.5-litre petrol engine for hybrid power, much as the production version will.

Peugeot 2008

2020 Peugeot 2008 front

On sale Late 2019

Having found plenty of success with the latest versions of its 3008 and 5008 SUVs, Peugeot’s attention now turns to its smallest such model. A rival to the Volkswagen T-Cross, the new 2008 gets a high-tech interior and the option of electric power.

Renault Captur

2019 Renault Captur

On sale Autumn

The second-generation Captur will arrive shortly after the new Clio hatchback, with which it shares its underpinnings. It features the same family look as the larger Kadjar, and features new 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engines, plus a 1.5-litre diesel. The same tablet-style infotainment system as in the Mégane will be standard.

Volkswagen T-Roc R

Volkswagen T-Roc R front

On sale Autumn

Replicating the Audi SQ2 and Cupra Ateca, Volkswagen has transplanted the innards of the Golf R hot hatch – a 296bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and part-time four-wheel drive – into its small SUV. The T-Roc R also gets sportier styling, firmer and lower suspension, and more powerful brakes.
