The car: Hyundai i40 Tourer 1.7 CRDi 115 Blue Drive Active
The saving: £4339
The discounted price: £16,015
The broker:

We already gave the i40 Tourer a four-star rating for being good value at the £20,235 list price, but at only slightly more than £16,000 it’s a steal.

The i40 may not be the most involving drive but it will happily soak up the motorway miles, keeping you well insulated in its quiet cabin environment. Performance from the 1.7-litre diesel engine is adequate and it will reward you with up to 65.7mpg. If you’re a company car user, you’ll find the low emissions mean cheap tax bills, too.

If practicality is your top priority, then the Tourer also scores well with its 553-litre boot. The rest of the cabin is roomy enough to seat four in comfort, or five at a push.

Finally, for peace of mind the i40 Tourer comes with a five-year warranty and a host of safety features, including a driver’s knee airbag and emergency brake assist.

The aforementioned boot, while big on ultimate space, is narrow and awkwardly shaped. When you require some extra space, the rear seats don’t fold completely flat, either.

It also loses points for comfort due to the high-set driving position and pronounced headrests, which leave your head at an odd angle.

On the move, the vague, artificial feel of the steering proves to be the Achilles’ heel of an otherwise competent chassis, and the powertrain is spoilt by a notchy six-speed manual gearbox.

Should I add any options?
Active trim provides you with air-conditioning, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, steering wheel controls, plus automatic headlights and wipers.

Beyond that, the only options on offer are metallic paint at £530 and a choice of a three- or five-year service plan.
