Fiat has reduced the price of its Fiat 500, Fiat 600e, Abarth 500e and Abarth 600e models by £1500.

The E-Grant, as Fiat calls its promotion, comes as a response to the Government’s Electric Car Grant (ECG) announced last month, which promises savings between £1500 and £3750 on new electric cars priced below £37,000.

However, since the Government has not yet revealed full eligibility criteria for the grant, an increasing number of manufacturers have chosen to get ahead and introduce their own versions, in order to avoid stalled sales where customers are waiting for details to be announced.

Firms like Hyundai, MG and Volvo have all introduced their own versions, as well as other Stellantis-owned brands like Alfa Romeo and Leapmotor.

Exclusive What Car? research showed that one in five (21%) in-market EV buyers are now delaying their purchase to wait for details of the discount. This could lead to losses of £389 million in new car sales.

The Government announced on Tuesday that the first cars eligible for level two of the ECG (a £1500 discount) will be six Citroën models, all of which are built either in mainland Europe or in the UK.

We know that eligibility for the ECG will depend on how much carbon is emitted during a car’s production process, meaning many cars built abroad might not be eligible or might only receive the smaller £1500 discount. The discounted Fiat models are built in Italy and Poland.

With the new discounts, prices for the Fiat 500e now start at £25,035 and jump to £29,985 for the Abarth 500e hot hatch version. Prices for the Fiat 600e now start at £30,035, and jump to £36,985 for the Abarth 600e.
