If you’re after a plush-feeling SUV with a modicum of driver appeal, the CX-30 should definitely be on your shortlist. Its real strength, though, lies in its ability to feel as luxurious as premium brands in this class at a much cheaper price.

Its 99% rating in the Adult Occupant Protection suite of crash tests is the highest ever achieved by a car in Euro NCAP testing. Like the Mazda 3, it also has class-leading active safety systems.

The B-Class is a roomier alternative to Mercedes' A-Class. It has a comfortable ride, stunning interior and lots of space inside. On top of that it performed extremely well in Euro NCAP crash tests, scoring 96% for adult protection and 90% for child occupant protection. It's equipped with a suite of active safety systems, including emergency lane keeping assistance, which helps to avoid collisions with oncoming vehicles and incidents involving the car running off the side of the road. On top of all this, it has a driver monitor that warns the driver if they're distracted or becoming too drowsy.

Based on the same platform as the A-Class, the CLA swaps some of that car's practicality for a large helping of style. With tidy handling and a largely comfortable ride, it’s a classy alternative to the Audi A3 Saloon.

Like the A-Class, it scores extremely well for child and adult occupant protection, and its deformable bonnet makes it one of the best cars in collisions with cyclists and pedestrians. In the event of an accident, it pops up to put space between the vulnerable road user and the solid engine bay components. It also has the same suite of active safety systems as the B-Class and A-Class.
