Our verdict
Choose either of these luxury limousines – to drive or to be driven in – and you’ll be far from disappointed. They both put up a very convincing fight; the Mercedes S-Class has the better ride, more fluid handling and a stunning interior, while the BMW 7 Series has a slightly bigger equipment list, is better for those in the back and is faster than its rival.
However, value matters quite a lot, even with more expensive used cars. So, the cheaper price just tips the balance in favour of the S-Class. The 7 Series is a great car in its own right and does well to beat the S-Class in some areas, but as an all-rounder it just falls short. The S-Class remains the best of its breed.
