As its name suggests, my Volvo XC40 First Edition was one of the earliest UK cars, with this now-discontinued trim sitting at the top of the range when the XC40 first went on sale. However, while it was expensive, you got a lot more equipment than you did with the R Design Pro trim on which it was based, including a Harman Kardon stereo, heated rear seats, a powered tailgate and a Pilot Assist system, which combines adaptive cruise control with steering assistance to allow semi-autonomous driving.
Indeed, assuming you wanted those option, the £39,905 First Edition actually represented good value, because it would cost £43,680 to add them all to an R Design Pro car by ticking boxes.
Maybe that explains why used First Edition XC40s are now going for slightly higher prices than they were when new, with the cheapest example in our classifieds being a 67-plate car (above) that's being advertised at £40,000. And it’s not like it's covered a lot of miles; the odometer reads just 4920.
That you could have bought an XC40, run it for six months and lost nothing in depreciation (usually the biggest cost of car ownership) is truly astounding, and shows just how desirable this family SUV is.
