The Nissan Micra has an attractive interior, good safety equipment and a decent petrol engine, but in other areas, particularly rear seat space and handling, it trails its rivals.

Top of the range Tekna trim is hard to recommend due to its price. Those interested in the extra equipment, however, will get everything on the Acenta trim plus 17in alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, a leather wrapped gear knob and handbrake, synthetic leather inserts on the dashboard and doors, keyless entry and start, the Bose stereo system we mentioned earlier, blind-spot warning and built-in sat-nav.

The petrol engine is fairly flat at low revs, but once the turbocharger kicks in, there’s plenty of power to make the Micra feel zippy when you’re driving around town. The manual Micra will get to 60mph in 11.8 seconds and can get you to motorway speeds quickly and easily.
