One of the very best small cars, standing out for ride comfort, interior quality and hushed cruising manners. The 1.2 Puretech 100 engine is punchy and doesn't drink much fuel. The Ford Fiesta and other rivals are much more fun to drive but few are quite as stylish.

Worthwhile if you want extra safety tech such as blind spot monitoring, an upgraded emergency brake system that can recognise vulnerable road users at night, as well as a bigger 10in infotainment screen. It’s a bit too pricey, though.

The PureTech 100 is a fairly gutsy engine and it pulls well from low revs, sprinting from 0-62mph in a respectable 9.9sec. It gets up to speed quickly, making it ideal for A-road and motorway driving. You can have this engine with either the manual or automatic gearbox, but we’d suggest sticking to the manual.
