The Peugeot 5008 is stylish, practical, good to drive and our favourite large SUV. It's relatively affordable to run, especially if you go for the entry-level 1.2-litre Puretech 130 petrol engine. If you regularly carry around lots of people and luggage, the more powerful engines are also worth a look.get the best price

Additions over Allure include rear window blinds, picnic tables on the back of the front seats, carpeted door bins, wireless phone charging and LED headlights. You also get nicer trims inside, but it’s not really worth the extra outlay in our book.

This 175bhp engine is flexible and has no trouble dealing with hefty loads. With the power and shove it has driving just the front wheels (you cannot get four-wheel drive with the 5008) it can scrabble for grip when accelerating hard from a standstill but, once moving, feels pretty brisk for such a big family wagon. It's also very smooth and quiet for a diesel and comes as standard with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, but it's quite expensive and not as strong as the equivalent Seat Tarraco or Skoda Kodiaq.
