The Peugeot 508 SW is certainly more practical than the 508 saloon, with a boot capacity that's slightly up on the Audi A4 Avant and BMW 3 Series Touring. However, while the 508 SW has an attractive interior and comes well equipped, it doesn't drive as well as those premium offerings and isn't as spacious or comfortable as cheaper estates from the likes of Skoda. It isn't a bad choice if you're swayed by the looks, but there are plenty of estates that are easier to recommend.

Even this entry-level trim is well equipped with 16in alloy wheels, auto lights and wipers, all-round electric windows, dual-zone climate control, heated mirrors, keyless entry and start, a leather steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors, a rear parking camera, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a 12.3in digital driver’s display and an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system with DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Safety is taken care of by standard automatic emergency braking with a distance alert, lane keep assist and a speed limit warning system.

The only diesel in the range is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder with 128bhp and a 0-62mph time of 10.1sec. It has a decent amount of low-down shove but ultimately feels rather breathless even with just on person in the car. It does have the lowest CO2 emissions of all the conventional engines and has a best claimed economy figure of over 60mpg, making it worth considering for high mileage drivers who aren’t in a hurry. Be warned, though, refinement isn’t its greatest strength.
