The Peugeot 508 SW is certainly more practical than the 508 saloon, with a boot capacity that's slightly up on the Audi A4 Avant and BMW 3 Series Touring. However, while the 508 SW has an attractive interior and comes well equipped, it doesn't drive as well as those premium offerings and isn't as spacious or comfortable as cheaper estates from the likes of Skoda. It isn't a bad choice if you're swayed by the looks, but there are plenty of estates that are easier to recommend.

On top of regular Allure trim, you get adaptive cruise control, a gesture-controlled electric tailgate, electric tilt adjustment for the seat base and manually adjustable under-thigh support and two extra USB ports in the back. We’d stick to the regular Allure.

This plug-in hybrid has a combined 222bhp, but an electric range of up to 39 miles means the lowest CO2 emissions in the range by a country mile. Because of the sizeable battery pack required to make that possible, it isn’t as quick as the Puretech 225; 0-62mph takes a still respectable 8.3sec. So what’s the catch? Even in the cheapest trim its available in, Allure, it’s one of the priciest engine choices, while you’ll need to run almost exclusively in electric mode to get close to the claimed economy figure of over 200mpg.
