For the ultimate driving thrills we’d opt for the 911 Carrera 2 Coupé or even the Cabriolet instead, but the Targa is still one of the best open-top sports cars you can buy

Trim: S

S models get a reasonable amount of equipment, including leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, a 10.9in touchscreen sat-nav system with Apple CarPlay, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, LED headlights, cruise control, heated seats and keyless entry. Several desirable bits of equipment aren’t included, though; rain-sensing wipers, lane–keeping assistance and keyless start are all on the options list.

Engine: S

This 3.0-litre ‘flat’ six has 444bhp and 391Ib ft of torque, enough for 0-62mph in as little as 3.6sec in a Carrera 4S with the optional Sports Chrono pack. The engine is flexible from low engine speeds but rewards being revved out with crushing pace and a characterful engine noise.
