There is a lot to like about the Seat Tarraco. It’s one of the better cars in the class to drive if you like something that feels a bit sporty, it's really generously equipped and it has a very good safety rating, if not the best in the class. But it isn’t as versatile as the very best large SUVs both in terms of space in its rear-most seats and its boot. There are cheaper alternatives, for private buyers and company car users alike.

This 148bhp 1.5-litre petrol is our pick of the range and great most of the time, feeling more than sufficient around town and when tackling longer jaunts along motorways. 0-62mph takes 9.9sec for the six-speed manual (9.5sec if you opt for the dual-clutch automatic ’box), which is roughly the same as the Kia Sorento Hybrid and Peugeot 5008 1.2 Puretech 130, and it only labours a little if the car's completely rammed to the rafters with people and luggage.
