Review

The Skoda Fabia is a fine small car and incredible value for money if you choose carefully. We reckon the 1.0 TSI 95 in SE trim makes the most sense considering the performance and equipment you get. If you want a small car that's even roomier and cheaper then look at the fantastic Dacia Sandero, while if it's superior handling you're after, try the dynamic Ford Fiesta.

A glance at the equipment list confirms why SE makes more sense than entry-level S trim. You get 15in alloy wheels, air-con, rear parking sensors, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, an umbrella, front fog lights, an alarm, six speakers, Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto and a height-adjustable passenger seat. It's our favourite trim.

You're better off spending a bit extra on this 94bhp turbocharged petrol engine over the entry-level 1.0 MPI 60. It has load more low-rev pull, so it's better suited to B-roads and motorways, and generally just makes for a more relaxed driving experience. It should also average between 45-50mpg in the real world if driven carefully, and has the option of a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. 0-62mph takes 10.7sec and if you want more poke there's a 109bhp 1.0 TSI 110 version with a six-speed manual 'box.
