Don't discount the Scala on the basis that it's cheap. It ticks many of the boxes that some more expensive family cars fail to do, with its supple ride, decent handling, good infotainment system, amazing rear seat space and vast boot. Only its cheap-looking interior and weaker-than-average resale values mark it down.

Monte Carlo is the sportier trim that features much of what comes with the SE L trim, plus a panoramic sunroof, sports seats, sports styling details inside and out and full LED headlights.

If you have a bit more money to burn we'd completely understand if you stepped up to the 148bhp 1.5 TSI 150 petrol. For those looking to carry lots of people and luggage its added zip – it really is quite quick, with 0-62mph in just 8.2sec – will be just the ticket. Still delivers sensible fuel economy, too.
