Review

Don't discount the Scala on the basis that it's cheap. It ticks many of the boxes that some more expensive family cars fail to, with its supple ride, decent handling, good infotainment system, amazing rear seat space and vast boot. Only its cheap-looking interior and weaker-than-average resale values mark it down.

Trim: SE

We'd recommend upgrading to SE trim. This gets added trinkets including a front centre armrest, cruise control, front-seat lumbar adjustment, a height-adjustable passenger seat, rear parking sensors and automatic lights and wipers. You also get an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system and Skoda's ‘simply-clever’ features. These aim to make life easier with the inclusion of a parking ticket-holder mounted on the windscreen pillar, an umbrella stowed away in a compartment in the front door, an ice-scraper that doubles up as a tyre tread-depth gauge clipped to the fuel-filler cap, and a cap for the screen-wash that unfolds and turns into a funnel.

Engine: 1.6 TDI

Provides a good swell of low-end shove, but it's no quicker than the 1.0 TSI 115 flat out and it's the least hushed engine in the range. The only benefit over the petrols is its fuel economy, because while CO2 emissions are the best in the range company car drivers will have to pay the 4% diesel supplement that bumps up your company car tax.
