Review

The Yaris has some real and important strengths, not least its superb fuel economy and the likelihood of excellent reliability. It should hold its value well, too, and while there are cheaper alternatives, you do get plenty of standard luxury and safety kit. However, the Yaris can’t match the Polo for interior quality, infotainment or ride comfort, and it's pretty cramped inside – especially compared with the Tardis-like Honda Jazz. Stick with the cheaper trim levels for the best value.

Dynamic trim starts by upping the wheel size to 17in and fitting sports suspension then adds keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, an eight-speaker JBL stereo and sports front seats with passenger height adjustment to everything Design gets.

A 0-60mph time of 9.0sec won’t set anyone’s trousers on fire, but the Yaris doesn’t struggle to get up to motorway speeds. It’s super economical, especially around town, but the 1.5-litre petrol engine is noisy when you aren't driving gently.
