Although it’s well equipped and has a hybrid engine option, the Toyota Yaris doesn’t excel in enough areas to stand out in the tough small car class

Trim: Icon

The Yaris is well equipped, even in the Icon entry-level trim; as well as Toyota’s Safety Sense package, you also get rain-sensing windscreen wipers and powered front windows. The 7.0in infotainment system with Bluetooth and a six-speaker audio system are also fitted across the range. Hybrid models additionally feature automatic air conditioning and projector headlights.

Engine: 1.5 Hybrid

This engine is borrowed from the Prius, albeit with a smaller battery pack. It is probably the quickest Yaris in-gear, thanks to the extra assistance from the electric motor, but the CVT gearbox is noisy, sending the revs flaring when you try and accelerate.
