Review

The Vauxhall Grandland X is competitively priced in most trim levels, and is well equipped and spacious enough for most families. However, it's hard to ignore the fractionally cheaper Skoda Karoq, which has a nicer interior, is sharper to drive and has a range of more refined engines. Company car drivers who are in the market for a family SUV will find the hybrid Grandland X models cost-effective.

Ultimate comes packed with every optional extra Vauxhall offers, featuring heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless mobile phone charging, a Denon premium sound system, a 360deg panoramic camera, premium LED adaptive forward lighting and adaptive cruise control with pedestrian detection.

You might expect this petrol engine to feel underpowered given its small capacity but, in reality, it is perfectly adequate. It also averages more than 50mpg in official fuel economy tests, no matter which wheels, tyres and gearbox you choose. A 1.0-litre Skoda Karoq or Seat Ateca is punchier, let alone a 1.5, however.
