This is the only petrol engine available for the Grandland, with 128bhp and 170lb ft of torque. That’s enough for a 0-60mph time of 10.4sec and a top speed of 122mph. There’s also an automatic gearbox available, which is 0.1sec quicker to 60mph.

Vauxhall has an incredibly diverse range of cars on sale, a few of which stand out above the class average. Add in the fact that it still offers some of the largest Target Price discounts in the market (something it is trying, without huge success, to cut back on), and there are very good reasons to consider buying one of its better models.

However, you need to choose carefully, because it is also a brand in transition. It has a newish parent company – the same one that owns Citroën, DS and Peugeot. And while Vauxhall’s newer models tend to be competitive, some of the others feel dated; a quick check of our star ratings will reveal which is which.

Still, given the recent success of sister brands Citroën and especially Peugeot, each new launch should make its range more appealing to buyers.

Mid-spec GS Line brings a sportier look to the Grandland, with black exterior highlights extending to the 18in wheels, roof and badging. There’s also a rear-view camera, adaptive cruise control, a larger 10in touchscreen and 12in digital instrument cluster, sat-nav and sports front seats.

Vauxhall Grandland

The Vauxhall Grandland is competitively priced in most trims, and is well equipped and spacious enough for most families. However, it's hard to ignore the fractionally cheaper Skoda Karoq or more practical Kia Sportage – both of which have nicer interiors and are sharper to drive. Company car drivers who are in the market for a family SUV will find the hybrid Grandland models cost-effective.

While we define a small SUV&nbsp;as something&nbsp;less than 4.3 metres long and a large SUV as measuring more than 4.5 metres, family SUVs tread the middle ground.

As the name suggests, the vast majority are&nbsp;designed for family duties rather than serious off-roading, so practicality is paramount. However, that&nbsp;shouldn't come at the expense of a decent drive; the best examples combine tidy handling with smooth engines&nbsp;and a ride that's comfortable&nbsp;enough to ensure the kids aren't left feeling queasy.

The Seat Ateca and&nbsp;Skoda Karoq should definitely be on your shortlist. But if you have a bit more to spend,&nbsp;the Range Rover Evoque is another strong option. If money is a concern, then the Dacia Duster provides comfortable, spacious and well-equipped transportation for an affordable price.
