The Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake offers a stylish alternative to the Volkswagen Passat Estate, without losing very much at all in the way of practicality. It's really practical, well equipped, has a pleasant interior and a decent range of engines, including the company car tax-saving plug-in hybrid. It is a bit pricey, though, and the resale values aren't great next to some of the competition, so do make sure you get a hefty discount.

If you’re fond of life’s little luxuries, Elegance is worth a look. For a reasonable extra fee, you get larger 18in wheels, part leather seats that are heated up front, keyless entry and more advanced driver assistance features.

The 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine and electric motor combined adds up to 215bhp, which means punchy performance and 0-62mph in 7.8sec. The official electric range is 38 miles, which will be more like 25 miles in the real world, and the battery takes around 3.5 hours to charge (0-100%) from a 7kW wall box. It's a great option for company car users.
