The VW Arteon Shooting Brake offers a stylish alternative to boxier estate cars without losing very much at all in the way of practicality. It's really spacious, well equipped, has a pleasant interior and a decent range of engines. For private buyers, we recommend the 2.0 TSI 190 petrol engine and Elegance trim, but as a company car, the plug-in hybrid will be a better option.

Sitting at the top of the Arteon range, the potent R version gets all of the R-Line’s kit but adds specially-designed 19in alloy wheels, Nappa leather sports front seats with electronic adjustment, a heated steering wheel and decorative black carbon panels on the dashboard and doors.

The top-spec performance R model has 316bhp, which makes it very quick – 0-62mph takes 4.9sec with the help of bespoke 4Motion four-wheel drive and the quick-shifting dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It's enjoyable but not as sweet-sounding or as fun as the cheaper BMW M340i Touring.
