The Volkswagen Arteon is good to drive, stylish and amazingly practical when considered in the company of other coupés, and even some saloons in the executive car class. It's not as dynamic to drive as a BMW 3 or 4 Series or as beautifully finished inside as an Audi A4 or A5, but it is comfortable, well equipped and relatively affordable to run as a private or company car. Just make sure you get a good deal if you're paying outright because the depreciation is worse than anything with a premium badge.

This trim is really about racier detailing inside and out, but you also get privacy glass, ambient interior lighting, 19in alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof. It's expensive and you lose the blind-spot monitoring and rear-view camera that comes with the cheaper Elegance trim.

Most people will shy away from the 2.0 TDI 150 on the grounds that it's a diesel and diesels aren’t popular anymore, but it does have the advantage of gutsy mid-range shove if you're someone with something to tow and up to a claimed average of nearly 60mpg. It's also RDE2 compliant if you're a company car driver. It's available with a six-speed manual gearbox or optional seven-speed dual-clutch auto 'box.
