The Golf Estate is a very practical family wagon. The boot is generously proportioned and it’s a comfortable car with a wide range of engines that all offer good performance and economy. We dislike its infotainment system and the fiddly dashboard buttons immensely, though, and a Skoda Octavia Estate offers more car for less cash.

R-Line adds sportier styling inside and out, stiffer sports suspension, a heated steering wheel, privacy glass and a driver profile (drive mode) switch. We really don’t think it’s worth the extra.

With 148bhp and a good slug of low down grunt, this engine feels genuinely punchy even when the car is filled to the brim with people and luggage – 0-62mph takes just 9.4sec. It’s also RDE2 compliant and will easily average more than 50mpg at a cruise.
