The Volkswagen ID.5 is a good all-rounder that comes with plenty of kit, a decent range and an excellent safety score. However, rivals including the Genesis GV60, Kia EV6, Tesla Model Y and Volvo C40 Recharge are faster, smarter inside, have much better infotainment systems and take less time to charge.

All models get ID Light LED matrix headlights, Volkswagen’s travel assist safety system, a powered tailgate, tri-zone climate control, an augmented-reality head-up display and 12-way-adjustable seats.

The 201bhp Pro Performance accelerates quickly enough for most, with an official 0-62mph time of 8.4sec. That's still quite a lot slower than any Kia EV6, though, let alone a Tesla Model Y Long Range. Official range is 313 miles.
