Competent engines, lots of high-tech equipment and a beautifully built cabin make the Passat Estate a compelling choice. It doesn’t quite live up to the overall finish of the Audi A4 Avant, though, and isn’t as spacious as the Skoda Superb.

Over and above all the kit you get on the regular GTE, the Advance adds keyless entry, an electric tailgate, digital driver display, Matrix LED headlights and a more advanced infotainment system. We'd save the money, though.

The Passat GTE uses a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor to pump out up to 215bhp. Acceleration is surprisingly brisk, with 0-62mph taking around 7.6sec, but it's the low CO2 emissions and claimed electric range of 36 miles that gives this model its real appeal.
