If you avoid the pricier trims and engines, the Volkswagen T-Roc is a fine buy. Its soft ride makes it one of the most comfortable cars in the class, while its spacious interior and big boot will appeal to families. Also, its high-set driving position is just what SUV buyers crave – and something many other small SUVs fail to deliver.

Top-tier R-Line trim is the most expensive rung on the T-Roc ladder, so it’s hard for us to recommend. If, however, you want the sportiest T-Roc (not including the T-Roc R), R-Line trim adds sportier R-Line styling, sports seats, stiffer sports suspension, switchable driver profiles and heated front seats.

This 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine is our pick of the range. It doesn’t cost all that much more than the entry-level engine but is much smoother and gives you plenty of extra shove, sprinting from 0-62mph in 8.6sec. Aside from offering more scope for overtaking manoeuvres, the extra power also makes carrying a full load of passenger and/or luggage much easier.
