Review

If you avoid the pricier trims and engines, the Volkswagen T-Roc is a fine buy. Its soft ride makes it one of the most comfortable cars in the class, while its spacious interior and big boot will appeal to families. Also, its high-set driving position is just what SUV buyers crave – and something many other small SUVs fail to deliver.

Top-spec model is mostly about more aggressive styling with R-Line logos throughout, but it does add a heated windscreen and 19in alloys. The larger wheels and sports suspension ruin the ride and it’s far too pricey to recommend.

The 148bhp 2.0 TDI 150 has great mid-range oomph that makes it ideal for towing and it'll hit 0-62mph in 8.8sec. Officially it will also average nearly 60mpg and it's RDE2 compliant, so you don't pay the 4% company car tax diesel surcharge.
