Review

The Volkswagen Tiguan offers generous space for its occupants and a big boot. It's far more than just a big box on wheels, though; its fine driving manners make it a great car to own. The closely related Skoda Karoq is better value for money, though, while the Volvo XC40 has a more upmarket interior.

R-Line trades a few of Elegance’s luxuries for sportier styling and big 20in wheels, plus it's even more expensive, so it's objectively hard to recommend.

This plug-in hybrid model combines a 1.4-litre petrol engine with an electric motor. In pure electric mode, the top speed is 81mph and the battery provides an official range of 31 miles. Ask for maximum acceleration and the petrol engine joins in, giving near hot-hatch performance (0-62mph takes just 7.5 seconds).
