The Volkswagen Tiguan offers generous space for its occupants and a big boot. It's far more than just a big box on wheels, though; its fine driving manners make it a great car to own. The closely related Skoda Karoq is better value for money, though, while the Volvo XC40 has a more upmarket interior.

Occupying the second rung on the Tiguan trim ladder, Life offers the best blend of luxury and value, adding sat-nav, 18in wheels, automatic high beam, tinted rear windows, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, three-zone climate control and releases in the boot for the rear seat backrest.

This 2.0-litre diesel has 148bhp and pulls hard from low revs, plus it's available with four-wheel drive (4Motion) if you need it. For most buyers, the equally powerful but cheaper 1.5 TSI 150 petrol is a better choice.
