Review

Practical for five people, luggage space is plentiful and it's good value in the lower trim levels, but in terms of interior quality and ride comfort the Touareg lags behind its rivals. It also lacks the flexibility of seven seats, all of which pushes us to recommend cars like the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Land Rover Discovery instead for their better all-round packages.

Trim: SEL

SEL trim gets plenty of equipment including 19in alloy wheels, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, leather seats, which in the front are heated with adjustable lumbar support, a 9.2in touchscreen infotainment screen, a DAB radio, sat-nav, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, ambient interior lighting, a rear-seat armrest, power-folding door mirrors, auto lights and wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, front and rear parking sensors, lane-keeping assistance, traffic sign recognition, a driver attention alert, and automatic emergency braking. Add air suspension and a couple of other choice options and it’s all you need.

Engine: 3.0 V6 TSI 4Motion

If diesel isn't your thing then what about the 335bhp 3.0 TSI petrol? It's by far the smoothest engine, staying creamy and quiet all the way from idle to maximum revs. And if you use all the revs it's fast, too — 0-62mph is done in 5.9sec — but it mimics the diesels by pulling strongly from low down as well. Really only a BMW X5 40i petrol betters it for pace among its equivalents. Expect around 27mpg at the very most.
