The Volvo XC40 blends generous passenger space and a practical boot with a quality interior and top-notch safety. That makes it a hugely desirable product backed up with real substance. If you do buy one, we recommend the B3 petrol engine and mid-spec Plus trim.

Range-topping Ultimate adds ambient interior lighting, leather upholstery, a panoramic opening sunroof, a Harman Kardon sound system and 20-inch alloy wheels, but it’s a big price jump.

This plug-in hybrid model is worth considering for its low CO2 emissions and its ability to drive on pure battery power for around 21 miles, based on our testing. It’s pretty quick when you put your foot down, too, with 0-60mph taking just 7.1sec when we timed it.
