Review

It might be some time since we voted the multitalented Volvo XC40 our Car of the Year, but it still cuts the mustard. It blends generous passenger space and a practical boot with a quality interior and top-notch safety. That means you aren't only buying a hugely desirable product, but one backed up with real substance. Just be aware that the plug-in hybrid Recharge versions aren't as good to drive as regular petrol models.

Our favourite trim. This adds seats trimmed in leather and suede, power-folding door mirrors, a powered tailgate, privacy glass and multicoloured ambient interior lighting to everything you get with cheaper Momentum trim. You also get sports suspension which gives you a more controlled, and ultimately more comfortable, ride.

The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine packs almost 250bhp and can hit 60mph from a standstill in just 6.1sec. It's expensive and thirsty, partially because it’s automatic and four-wheel drive only, so hard to recommend. What’s more, its 2100kg maximum towing capacity is equalled by less powerful petrol and diesel versions.
