The multitalented XC40 is so good we named it our 2018 What Car? Car of the Year. It blends practicality traits, such as good passenger space and a very practical boot, with comfort, a quality interior and a top-notch safety rating. That means you are not only buying a stylish product, but one backed up by substance, too. Overall it's a better family SUV than a BMW X1 or X2, but check out the Range Rover Evoque before you buy, which is a fine car and the XC40’s strongest rival.

Inscription trim pushes up the price, but not unbearably so. If you fancy some luxury, you might well be tempted. Leather seat trim, metallic paint, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, front parking sensors, a powered tailgate, multicolour theatre ambient lighting, wood trim inlays and a crystal gearlever on automatic versions are all standard.

Engine:

2.0 D3

The cheapest diesel engine in the lineup is also the best fit for the XC40. It's more flexible at low engine speeds than the T3, so although it's not a great deal faster you don't have to work it so hard to make progress. Plus, it returns impressive real-world fuel economy. Available with an automatic or manual gearbox, as well as front or four-wheel drive.
