The XC90 is a fine seven-seat SUV that combines a high quality, spacious and versatile interior with plenty of kit and top-notch safety credentials. The Audi Q7 is still a better overall package, though, and don't rule out the Land Rover Defender if you're happy with something slightly more rugged.

Mid-range Plus adds adaptive LED headlights, a sunroof, ambient lighting, a 360-degree parking camera and a Harman Kardon sound system upgrade.

The entry-level petrol doesn't use a supercharger like the more powerful T6, but it is turbocharged. It has perfectly adequate performance for most situations (it'll hit 0-62mph in a claimed 7.7sec), but you do need to work it quite hard to realise that performance. It is pretty refined when revved, though, but while it'll reach 30mpg driven gently on the motorway, you'll struggle to hit 25mpg around town.
