Hot Fiat Grande Punto Abarth at Geneva
- Abarth Punto to develop 155bhp or 180bhp
- On sale towards the end of this year
- 'Puntograle' with over 200bhp still possible
Fiat will relaunch its Abarth brand at the Geneva motor show, with this hot Grande Punto.
On sale towards the end of this year, the Grande Punto Abarth comes with a choice of two engines. The first uses a turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol, developing 155bhp to rival the likes of the Ford Fiesta ST. The second 1.4-litre car produces 180bhp to keep on terms with the Vauxhall Corsa VXR (another Geneva show star).
Fiat says the car on show is just a preview of the final Abarth Punto, but much of what you see here could easily be used for production cars.
The scorpion badges of the Abarth brand are not just on the rear wings, but also replace the Fiat badges on the front and rear bumpers.
Insiders have told whatcar.com in the past that an even hotter version of the Punto with over 200bhp - maybe even an outrageous 240bhp - 2.4-litre engine is in the pipeline.
The press release for the Geneva cars confirms something faster is coming, saying that the 1.4-litre models are 'Abarth's first interpretation of the Grande Punto', and that 'other models will be involved later'.
Nicknamed the Puntograle (after the famous Delta Integrale from sister company Lancia), this scorching supermini with over 200bhp is likely to feature a four-wheel drive system.
