Lancer leads the line

25 June 2007

When Mitsubishi launches its Lancer saloon at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, it will be the first of a number of models to use the new car's chassis.

As well as the Lancer, the car's platform will also be used for the next-generation Outlander and the Delica MPV/4x4 crossover vehicle, which isn't sold in the UK.

The Lancer will go on sale in the UK in 2008, as will the high-performance Lancer Evolution, the next version of Mitsubishi's famous Evo cars.

Joining them in 2008 will be the five-door Lancer Sportback, a hatchback that Mitsubishi says will have a 'coupe-like profile'.

The Lancer will be offered with four engines. Petrols include 108bhp 1.5-litre and 142bhp 1.8-litre engines, and there's also a 138bhp 2.0-litre Volkswagen-sourced diesel.

Completing the engine line-up is a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine, which is reserved for the Lancer Evolution, but its power rating is being kept under wraps for now.

There will be a choice of five- or six-speed manual, CVT, four-speed automatic and six-speed automated manual gearboxes, depending on the engine.
