Douglas Alexander is the new transport secretary following a cabinet reshuffle.

Alexander, who also is now Minister for Scotland, takes over from Alistair Darling at the DfT as the Government aims to push through parliament a raft of new laws that will affect UK motorists.

The Road Safety Bill aims to introduce and overhaul a wide range of laws, covering speeding to mobile phones and uninsured drivers.

The DfT is also considering making changes to drink-driving laws and looking at road-charging to cut congestion.

Alexander, MP for Paisley and Renfrew South, was previously Minister for Europe. The job as transport secretary is his first cabinet post.
