A couple of months ago, I mentioned what appeared to be a glitch with the S-Cross when changing down gears - I had to come to an almost complete stop before changing down to first, to avoid the gearbox crunching its cogs.

This week, Suzuki took the car away to swap the existing gearbox oil for a slightly different grade. The result? So far, so good, although I'll keep you updated on how I get on next week.

The recent wet weather means any trip out with the kids requires several footwear changes, and wellies are an essential item to put in the boot wherever we go.

To save on soggy socks and backache, the S-Cross has a brilliant adjustable boot floor, which means the boys can sit under the tailgate while I change them into their wellies. It certainly makes my life a lot easier!

I'd been pretty disappointed with the first interim economy figure of only 24.9mpg after my first month driving the S-Cross. Some of my more experienced colleagues put it down to town driving, which I have to admit, has been the main use of the Suzuki for me so far.

So imagine my relief (and pride) when after my last trip trip to the petrol station, the latest figure worked out as 43.6mpg. I'd say a couple of recent motorway trips and lending it to a colleague with a 110-mile commute for a few days made all the difference.

We'll have to see if I can treat the S-Cross (and the kids) to a few days out over the upcoming half-term break to keep that figure up.
