The trouble with being a road tester is you find yourself obsessing about the technical aspects of a car and sometimes forget to just enjoy the thrill of living with modern cars. I don’t have that problem with the XJ.

I mean, just look at the picture above. All spruced up, looking suave and sophisticated, we hopped into the Jag and set off to the What Car? Car of the Year Awards at the Grosvenor House in London’s Park Lane. En route, there were a couple of grumbles from the back seats about the XJ’s ride being too firm, but that had more to do with the cratered surfaces that pass for London’s city streets, rather than the work of Jaguar’s engineers.

The XJ is a spectacular car, whether you’re on the outside looking in, or enjoying that beautiful interior. On a dull winter’s afternoon with the daylight fading and the cool blue mood lighting reflecting off the black carbonfibre trim and chrome highlights, there are few more impressive places to relax and enjoy the sights. You can almost forgive the fact that the cabin isn’t the last word in substance.

We certainly turned plenty of heads as we arrived at the Grosvenor – and the car didn’t look bad, either.
