Which to get?

At the moment the thousands of orders Land Rover has received for the Evoque in the UK are split 50:50 between the three- and five-door. The manufacturer expects the five-door to sell more in time, however, and considering the extra practicality it brings, with little sacrifice in looks, it's easy to see why.

It's obviously easier to get into and out of the back seats, but there's also more headroom as the roof doesn't slope as dramatically as it does on the three-door.

Only one of the cars we sampled had trim anything close to production quality, but it felt impressive. Soft leather finishes on the dash, flush switchgear with positive action and very comfortable, shapely figure-hugging seats all point to a very upmarket feel.

There are iPod and USB connections galore and options include a panaromic glass roof, self-parking systems, 360-degree camera coverage, digital/satellite television, rear seat entertainment packages and self-heater timing systems.

The Evoque is available to pre-order now, with prices starting at around 30,000. First deliveries of Land Rover's new baby will be made in time for the new registration plate in September.
