As an update to my review of 19/1/2008, my car was off the road for 5 weeks. Audi Grimsby lent me an A6 S Line Avant 2.0 diesel with 1200 miles on the clock, so I cannot fault their customer service.
Audi made a goodwill gesture of 50% discount, but I still had a bill of £750 to pay, which, for a car of just over 3 years old and of this quality, is not good.
I'm seriously looking at changing to a Volvo S80 or something like it. I will lose money but will regain confidence in the car I am driving.
Having owned a 2.7TDi SE Quattro 2006 model prior to this car I had high expectations of Audi. This model which I purchased in July 2007, from an Audi dealership with 11,000 on the clock, has been somewhat of a disappointment by comparison.
The oil indicator light has come on twice in this period in only 3000 miles. The dealership justified that this was acceptable on the basis that the handbook states that upto 0.5L of oil per 1000 km is 'normal'. This is somewhat of a novel experience as I don't recall having needed to add extra oil between services since I owned my first Morris Marina in 1986! Somewhat surprising that Audi believes that this is OK in 2007.
Other faults were a rattle, which the dealership tracked down on their second attempt, and a juddery clutch that regularly caused the car to stall in awkward places (eg when crossing busy dual carriage ways). They replaced the clutch plates which has helped.
I find the very high biting point for the clutch pedal awkward compared to previous cars and which also contributes to the risk of stalling. Also the lack of any acceleration in the first gear is not a positive feature
Overall whilst the car is fine to drive (once you've got out of first gear) I have been disappointed by these poor quality design/build issues. I would have expected much more from Audi, and have previously experienced far better quality with previous cars and other manufacturers.
Superb car. Supremely comfortable, well ventilated and heated / cooled. The ride is a bit harsh, but very little body roll, and the 4WD provides astonishing cornering & grip. I've never had a tyre squeak (ESP) Fuel consumption for my journeys averages 32 mpg since I bought it, on a good run up to Brum, I've seen 49mpg, and that wasnt hanging about. Its VERY quite, super sound system, one niggling squeak from the area of the glove box, seems worse in winter. The auto box is not as good as my old Mitsubishi Galant, you always feel the change in this, and the turbo lag can be a little surprising when pulling out in traffic. Pull the stick back into "Silly" mode though, and OMG! If I have a complaint its the service costs, Audi assume everyone is running a company car. Tyres are also pricey, but this is a 240BHP, 140mph car, so I dont skimp. I had heart-stopping warning light on the dash - thankfully I took out the optional extra warranty - it was a sticking valve on the manifold. Its three and a half years old now, I'd like another, funds permitting.
We have had the A6 for a week and the first impressions are very favourable. The two full size children are comfortable in the back, the seats are very comfortable and the climate control keeps everyone happy. The car has lots of clever touches such as the interior lighting in the footwells and armrests and the driver displays give plenty of information. Any problems? No, none at all. The MMI is easy to use but I would like it to be able to display my phonebook, missed calls etc but this is only available on the MMI basic-plus. I'll update this after I've taken it on some longer journies, maybe to Dubai in December. I can't really comment on the running costs as petrol here is only about 8p/litre.

I've had 6 VWs now including this one and it is a mixed bag. In no particular order the economy is poor despite the FSI badging and in town never…
Why is there so much whining about the rear sets? It's small - it's called a "mini" (hint). It didn't get any smaller after you bought it, so deal…
